Not a builder, builder. A website builder!
These days it’s so easy to get hood winked in to thinking that online do-it-yourself website builders, that only cost a few pounds a month, will work for you and your start-up business.
The harsh reality is that you will probably create a website that fails to deliver. It can also be painful to admit you’ve wasted hours of your precious time, especially when it could have been put to more productive use: such as finding some business clients – you know, the ones that pay the bills!
Further down the line, assuming you’ve got past the self-adulation of creating your new website, you realise the site you just made looks cheap, homemade and doesn’t do half the things you wanted it to in the first place. Just how many hours did it take you? What is your time worth?
Our recommendation is quite simple – let someone who really knows what they are doing build your website. And by ‘really knows’ I mean someone who understands start-ups and small businesses. Choose a company who will offer practical advice along the way. Your website is only one cog in the structure of your business, albeit a very important one! Get it right and you should reap the benefits. Get it wrong and you might find that success is further away than you’d hoped!
However, you need to be careful to make sure that you don’t fall into the next trap. Just because a web designer shows you a pretty website they built for someone else, it does not mean they have the first clue on building a site that’s right for you and your business. Building your first website does not need to be a difficult or overly expensive experience. Ask yourself some simple questions to determine the information you need to convey and have your chosen designer work the answers into your sites design and structure:
- What am I offering - is it a product or a service?
- Who am I offering it to - who is your target Audience?
- Where am I offering it - is there a specific geographic location?
- What do I want to happen next – should your potential clients call you, fill in a form etc.?
- What is my unique selling point – why should they chose you over your competition?
If you have not thought about any of these questions and your web design team are ready to begin the design then I would argue that they are not really interested in the success of your business, just your money!
Is this harsh? Perhaps. But it’s your business, your investment. If the future of your business is about getting your message right, and delivering it in the most efficient way, then take the time to make an informed decision. Too many people go with the first web designer they meet. The benefits of speaking to two or three designers will help you understand your own requirement much better and potentially help you to make a more informed decision.
